The Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) is a requirement placed on every Local Education Authority in England and Wales.

It is responsible for advising the Local Authority in matters concerning the teaching of religious education and collective acts of worship. It also adjudicates on exceptions from the requirement to hold Christian collective worship.

Each SACRE consists of four representative groups in England and three in Wales:

• Christian and other religious denominations
• The Church of England (England only)
• Teachers associations/unions
• Elected Councillors

As far as can be seen these bodies are unique and require Local Authorities to consult with different religions.

SACREs are an important forum for representatives of different faiths working together and have sometimes spawned local inter faith groups and councils.
